Although he already released an album of rarities (
Advance Base Battery Life) earlier this year, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone's Owen Ashworth shows no signs of slowing down. On his new full length release,
Vs. Children, Ashworth embraces his quirky indietronica side that all his fans know and love. With ridiculous song titles ("Tom Justice, The Choir Boy Robber, Apprehended At Ace Hardware In Libertyville, IL"), bouncy keys, and deadpan vocals,
Vs. Children is a great upbeat album for the spring season. Highlights include the sarcastic lyrics on "Optimist Vs. The Silent Alarm (When The Saints Go Marching In)" about raising a family on Schlitz and Mickey Mouse, the jangly melodies of "Traveling Salesman’s Young Wife Home Alone On Christmas In Montpelier, VT," and the warbling pop of "Harsh The Herald Angels Sing." While
Vs. Children may not be blazing any new musical trends, it's a very solid indie-pop record and a nice reminder that sometimes that most entertaining albums are the simpliest-sounding ones.
