Cat Power - Dark End Of The Street EP

Although 2008 is coming to a close, there are still a handful of albums that have yet to be released, like Cat Power's new covers EP, Dark End Of The Street, which comes out on December 12th. Chan Marshall is obviously no stranger to covering songs, and this collection of six tracks recorded during the Jukebox sessions shows that clearly. The one complaint I have about any song that Marshall chooses to cover is that it always sounds like a Cat Power song, as in she doesn't reach beyond her signature talents and record the song differently. Despite that issue, Marshall has compiled a nice collection of covers on Dark End Of The Street, ranging from The Pogues to Aretha Franklin to Otis Redding. This EP may not be anything to write home about, but it will definitely appeal to Cat Power fans and anyone else interested in hearing if her cover versions do any justice to the original classics.
