When bands release EP's, the most you ever expect is anywhere from three to five tracks and maybe a running length of fifteen minutes at the most. Modest Mouse, however, has decided to show up every other EP-releasing band by stuffing their new EP,
No One's First And You're Next, with eight tracks, clocking in at just over a half an hour long. Due out on August 4th, the EP contains unreleased tracks and b-sides from the band's two previous studio albums, 2004's
Good News For People That Love Bad News and 2007's
We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. A nice little odds and ends collection for rabid fans,
No One's First And You're Next is chock full of gems, including the brash, in-your-face riffs of "Satellite Skin," the stabbing guitars on the (mostly) instrumental "The Whale Song," the vocal yelps and horn swagger on "Perpetual Motion Machine," and the interweaving, catchy melodies on the awesomely-titled, "History Sticks To Your Feet." As someone that hasn't listened to Modest Mouse on a constant basis very recently, this EP serves as a strong reminder as to how great they can be when they're at their best. And, trust me,
No One's First And You're Next is pretty damn close to that.
