When I first heard that former Death From Above 1979 drummer, Sebastien Grainger, had signed to Saddle Creek and was going to be releasing his debut solo album this year, I was worried that Grainger had gone soft and we'd end up with an album full of meandering acoustic tracks. Although his full length has yet to appear, thankfully Grainger's new digital EP,
American Names, makes it very clear that he hasn't lost his edge at all. Stomping out of the gate with the title track, Grainger's vocals command total control over the listener, as guitars, drums, and hand-claps meld together to form an aggressively catchy hook that is impossible to not nod your head along to. It's clear from this track, and the three others on the EP, that Grainger took what he learned from the dance-punk scene and is now applying it in a new way to his over-the-top theatrics on
American Names. Hopefully his debut album,
Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains, sounds just as refreshing when it's released on October 21st.

to bp: Alpinisms is a really great record. I'm reviewing it for a website. and it is very, very good.

Awesome EP, however not quite yet sold on the album.
Right? I downloaded the album yesterday, and was super psyched to listen to it...but it was a bit of an initial letdown.
