Volcano Choir - Unmap

It's not enough for Justin Vernon that he's achieved a ridiculous amount of success with Bon Iver. Recently, Vernon got together with his fellow Wisconsinites, Collections of Colonies of Bees, and they formed Volcano Choir -- an experimental electro group with Vernon's recognizable falsetto leading the way. While Unmap may lean too heavily on the odd experimentation at times (what the fuck is going on in "Mbira in the Morass"?), overall it's a great record that balances Vernon's vocals with loops and subtle acoustic brushes. "Seeplymouth" starts off with soft drums and electric guitars, all of which is then layered into a building soundscape complete with Vernon's echoed voice and snippets of recorded sounds. The real highlight by far though is "Island, IS," which features more vocals from Vernon than most of the other tracks and a minimalistic see-saw loop that sucks you right in. Volcano Choir may not appeal to all Bon Iver fans, but those that love looped electronics and would listen to Vernon sing just about anything will definitely get on-board with this release.
