Girls - Album

Sometimes it's impossible to ignore the buzz, especially when it's as snotty and brash as San Francisco's the Girls are. Album is their debut release, due out on September 22. Made up of several dudes and no ladies, Girls combine a scrappy punk rock attitude with the sheen of '60s pop to make for a ridiculously infectious debut. "Lust For Life" is not an Iggy Pop cover, but rather a two minute boppy jam that finds the Girls wishing for a beach house, a boyfriend, and some pizza and a bottle of wine. All ingredients to an excellent summer and one of the best songs on Album. What makes the Girls so great is that they can do the punk rock thing and they can also write compelling, plaintive melodies, best heard on the song "Ghost Mouth." Oh, and they also have a song called "Big Bad Mean Mother Fucker" that sounds like a lost Beach Boys song, except the Beach Boys were never this ballsy. This band is not a one trick pony like so many groups aboard the hype train usually are. Summer may almost be over, but there's still time for one more catchy record before the trees go completely bare.
