A Place To Bury Strangers - Exploding Head

When I heard that A Place To Bury Strangers had a new album called Exploding Head coming out later this year, I pretty much assumed it would sound like their 2007 self-titled debut: loud as fuck. While it's safe to say that my hypothesis was accurate, APTBS have also managed to balance their noisy side with some lovely shoegaze melodies and atmospheric sounds that add a great deal of depth to Exploding Head. Observe the barreling riffs and ethereal vocals on "It Is Nothing," the fuzzy romanticism of "In Your Heart," or the twitchy drone of "Smile When You Smile," all strong indicators that there is much more to APTBS than just a wall of sound. Although Exploding Head doesn't differ too much from the self-titled, why mess with your sound when you're great at what you do? It would be interesting to see APTBS insert some synths or keys on their next record, but for now, the dark psychedelic tones of Exploding Head will have to suffice. If you were a fan of their debut, there is no doubt that you will love this album just as much.
