Although they've been around since 1996, Massachusetts' Wheat have always been more of a critical darling band than one with an extensive fanbase. Hopefully that will change with the release of their fifth studio album,
White Ink, Black Ink. Opener, "Hott," kicks the album off with familiar-sounding boppy indie-pop, a sound that is as perfect for a summer mix as it for soundtracking any single teenage movie. Thankfully, Wheat are a bit more mature than that, as evidenced by the twinkling xylophone and thoughtful lyrics of "If Everything Falls" and the layered harmonies of "Two Mountains." Overall
White Ink, Black Ink is a pretty decent addition to Wheat's discography and will definitely appeal to longtime fans of the band. Wheat may not be branching out into any experimental territory on this album, but they're got their indie-pop schtick down pat.
