Wouldn't it be cool if all bands recorded EP's in-between full length albums and released them for public consumption? That's precisely what Spoon decided to do with their
Got Nuffin EP, due out on June 30th, their first piece of recorded music since 2007's
Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. The title track is a typical Spoon rock song, with a tight rhythm section, stabbing guitars, and Britt Daniel singing about having nothing to lose. It's not bad, per se, but it's certainly nothing new from the Austin quartet. The first of the two b-sides is "Tweakers," a very un-Spoon-like instrumental with a repetitive backbeat that sounds like it was recorded underwater. On the other end of the musical spectrum is the second b-side, "Stroke Their Brains," an awesome track with jazzy riffs, ghostly sound effects, and bouncy keys that fades just after the three-minute mark into silence even though the track clocks in at over seven-minutes. Also included on this EP is a remix of "Tweakers," which is barely better than the original. If you're a fan of Spoon, the
Got Nuffin EP will not only serve as a nice addition to your collection, but also as a sneak peek behind closed recording studio doors.
