Coconut Records - Davy

Most actors that attempt to parlay their industry success into a music career fail miserably (ScarJo, anyone?), but thankfully the talented Jason Schwartzman hasn't yet succumb to that stereotype with his musical endeavors. His most recent band, Coconut Records, (which is basically just Schwartzman and a revolving cast of friends), released their power-pop debut, Nighttiming, in March 2007 and have just recently completed a follow-up album, Davy. The new release continues in the vein of Nighttiming's catchy hooks, but also feels like more of a cohesive piece of work at the same time. At just under a half an hour long, Schwartzman channels his inner '90s era Rivers Cuomo (not that Red Album shit) on Davy, singing about being known only as the drummer in Phantom Planet ("Drummer"), not having fun ("Any Fun"), wandering around ("Wandering Around"), and, uh, the summer ("The Summer"). The only thing really missing from Davy is the pop crunch of Nighttiming tracks like "West Coast" and "Back To You." Boppy piano melodies and Schwartzman's likeable vocals are at the center of this album and although it may not be the ten most original songs you've ever heard, chances are you will still catch yourself singing along by the end of the album.
