Combining a Deerhoof-like energy with singer Molly Siegel's hyper-whine vocals on overdrive, Ponytail are perhaps the most underrated band in the entire Baltimore scene right now. They may not draw in Dan Deacon-sized crowds, or make your heart melt like Beach House attempts to do, but there is something so undeniably amazing in their spastic blend of punk rock that you can't help but fall in love automatically. Thankfully, they now have a new album for you to obsess over, as their sophomore effort, Ice Cream Spiritual, comes out on June 17th. Siegel has never sounded more out of control on the mic, as she spits and screams out tracks like "Beg Waves" and "7 Souls" with more fury than you'd expect. Guitars riffs reminiscent of fellow Baltimore band, Ecstatic Sunshine, coil around her words, stabbing your ears with their jagged and intense layers. The Ecstatic Sunshine reference makes sense though, as guitarist Dustin Wong is actually a former member. Clocking in at just over a half an hour, Ice Cream Spiritual's eight tracks fly by at a moment's notice, leaving you strung out on their beautiful noise, and ready to play it again and again.
