I don't know about the rest of you, but I've pretty much been looking forward to the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album for the past three years now. Thankfully, it does not disappoint too much. Lead single, "Zero," kicks the album off with pummeling synths and upbeat, dancey melodies. It's the same Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but with a more optimistic spin on their music, and less of a punk edge. At first, I missed the less polished sound, but Karen O.'s familiar caterwauling vocals serve as a great reminder of why the Yeah Yeah Yeahs achieved their initial round of success. Produced by their longtime producer, TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek,
It's Blitz! flies by quickly at just over forty minutes and ten tracks, but it's the kind of uptempo album that you're likely to play over and over again anyway. While the first several tracks breeze by, it's "Skeletons" that really slows the album down with its building synths, drum taps, and Nick Zinner's atmospheric guitar tone. A track that is clearly meant to be played live. From there,
It's Blitz! turns the volume up a bit with the fiery guitars of "Dull Life," the epic "Runway," and the romantic "Hysteric." It may not be the best Yeah Yeah Yeahs record ever, but
It's Blitz! is certainly an interesting and innovative direction for this trio to explore.
