When you've been a band since 1984 and have recorded over fifteen albums, there's no shame in shaking things up a little bit by messing with the very fanbase that has supported you from the beginning. In this instance, Yo La Tengo have recorded an album under the name Condo Fucks, called
Fuckbook. Although the description on Matador's
website doesn't acknowledge that this album is made by Yo La Tengo, it doesn't take a hardcore fan to figure this mystery out. Also, listening to the album doesn't hurt either.
Fuckbook is a half-hour blast of lo-fi noise, with fuzzy vocals, buzzsaw guitars, and a decent helping of feedback. Basically, Yo La Tengo wanted to make a noise album and didn't feel recording it under their own name. Each track sort of blends into the next, and there is definitely no guarantee that you'll like this if you're a Yo La Tengo fan. But there are gems on this album, like the pop bliss of "With A Girl Like You" or the instrumental jam "Shut Down Part 2."
Fuckbook is definitely not for everyone, but it will surely resonate with fans of noisy pop.
