No Age with Zach Hill - Flannel Graduate

No Age's newest album, Nouns, was one of my favorites of 2008 (look for it on my Best of 2008 list--coming soon!), so it should come as no surprise that I'll pretty much post any EP, single, or random release whatsoever that the duo of No Age had a hand in. In this case, it's Flannel Graduate, a Japanese tour-only CD-R that sold out almost immediately during No Age's tour with Zach Hill from Hella. This three-track CD-R features two songs that, uh, aren't really "songs," mostly because they clock in at nine and eleven seconds, respectively. The third track, "California Bird Dudes," is the heavyweight though, at just over twenty minutes long, featuring Zach and Dean Spunt's drumming chaos and Randy Randall's signature feedback and guitar riffs. With incomprehensible vocal bits, drum loops, and washed out noise soundscapes, this track sounds like it would fit in better with any of the bands that Zach Hill drums for, rather than on a No Age record. Thankfully, twenty-two minutes of noise is just enough and the trio doesn't decide to overstay their welcome. Flannel Graduate is a worthwhile download for any rabid No Age or Zach Hill fans, or any lover of noise in general.
