It's about time Bon Iver (aka Justin Vernon) released some new music! Riding on the coattails of this year's critically acclaimed debut,
For Emma, Forever Ago,
Blood Bank is Vernon's new EP and the first highly anticipated leak of 2009. Although the EP is only four tracks long, it provides enough of an insight into Vernon's new direction and is definitely a worthwhile listen for all Bon Iver fans. The title track gets things started with Vernon's great cathartic vocals and calming guitars that slowly swell as the song builds, ending in a brooding squall of noise that sounds refreshing coming from such an intimate singer/songwriter like Vernon. "Beach Baby" is next and sounds like a typical Bon Iver song: acoustic guitar? Check! Vernon's melancholy vocals? Check indeed. "Babys," (yes it's supposed to be spelled that way), follows and is definitely one of the standouts on
Blood Bank, complete with bouncy keys you never thought you'd hear coming from Vernon. Nor did you expect to hear Auto-Tune, but that's just what Vernon delivers on the last track, "Woods." Thankfully it comes off more in the vein of Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" than some white boy version of T-Pain or Kanye West. And once the rest of the track kicks in with chilling vocal harmonies, you won't even care that there's Auto-Tune.
Blood Bank is further proof that Justin Vernon can do no wrong, and that he isn't afraid to take chances that most singer/songwriters would naturally shy away from.

Cool! Thanks Anna!
Bon Iver and auto-tune? Never would have thought!
yahhhhh, BUT [this isn't directed at you anna] a distinction should be made between using it to 'fix' bad vox and when using it for atmospheric effect [as bon iver does here]. peeps been manipulating shiz for years. this auto-hate fad is lame. if ya don't like, don't listen, but don't spread faux-controversy.
sooooo awesome. this made my week, and on a Friday nonetheless!
there was a bit too much "never thought you would hear" and "what you wouldnt expect from vernon" phrases in this review.
he has only released one album for christ's sake, I don't think anyone needs to pigeonhole his music at such an early stage.
Thanks, though.
he already used auto tune on for emma. the wolves. listen carefully.
It's not auto tune. It is a vocoder.
yeah definitely not something new from him.
Autotune or not, this is a pretty sick EP to follow up with. go Justin.
Is there anything better than getting a Bon Iver EP just in time for the bleak winter Chicago is about to be faced with? I think not.
I am so excited to listen to this!
