Way back in June of 2008, I
posted Feral Children's reissued full length album,
Second To The Last Frontier, introducing many of you to this fairly unknown Seattle band. On their second album,
Brand New Blood, due out this month, Feral Children shake the Modest Mouse comparisons and settle into their own sound. The crashing cymbals and tightly wound guitars of "Kid Origami," the restrained drum taps on "Group Home," and the playful yelps on "On A Frozen Beach" show that Feral Children know when to go all out and when to scale back their sound. Unlike
Second To The Last Frontier, which was a more chaotic album,
Brand New Blood is contemplative, allowing the band to ruminate on its own sound rather than play each track like its their last. This is an interesting concept, because it strips Feral Children down to their core. Without the noise, they rely heavily on atmospheric sounds ("Rivers of Forever") and the sturdy vocals of Jim Cotton and Jeff Keenan.
Brand New Blood represents a new chapter in Feral Children's inevitably long career, one that shows them really coming into their own. It's a journey that you'll definitely want to be a part of.
