Hot on the heels of the Dirty Projectors' acclaimed summer release,
Bitte Orca, comes the
Temecula Sunrise EP, a four-song effort featuring two songs from
Bitte Orca (the title track and "Cannibal Resource") and two unreleased tracks, "Ascending Melody" and "Emblem of the World." "Ascending Melody" wouldn't sound out of place on
Bitte Orca, with its, uh, ascending guitar melodies and singer Dave Longstreth's soaring vocals. The song also goes into a handclap and percussion breakdown a little more than halfway through which is a welcome surprise in what is otherwise a pretty middle of the road song. "Emblem of the World" also has some surprises packed into its four minutes, with booming drums, tightly wound guitars, and Longstreth repeating the song's title over and over again. The guitars almost sound oriental on this track, an interesting dynamic that remains throughout the entire song. Although the two b-sides are obviously the main draw of this EP, I found myself enjoying the two album tracks just as much, both of which reminded me of the fact that
Bitte Orca's top contender status is far from fleeting.
