Wild Nothing - Gemini

When it comes to Jack Tatum's solo bedroom project, otherwise known as Wild Nothing, lots of genre labels have been thrown around lately, in hopes of pinning down the perfect way to describe Tatum's blend of dreamy synth-pop. Tonight, a friend of mine described Wild Nothing as "otherworldly," which I think sums up Tatum's aesthetic much better than silly words like "chillwave" or "glo-pop" do. On his debut album, Gemini, Tatum breaks the lo-fi mold with an album that is so dense and texturally lush that it truly does sound like it came from another world. Working in bits of shoegaze, trebly indie-pop, and his own intimate vocals, Tatum has crafted an album that turns every genre label inside-out. From the guitar shuffle and whispered Pains of Being Pure at Heart-esque vocals of "Summer Holiday," to the shimmering synths of "Drifter," or the colliding synth beats of "Bored Games," it's clear that Tatum probably likes the same bands as you, but that doesn't mean he's going to waste time cribbing their sound for Wild Nothing. Gemini is a fantastic album and one that will hopefully stick with listeners beyond the summer months.
